Aprender inglés es fácil cuando conoces algunos elementos claves de su gramática; en este post encontrarás el uso correcto del there is there are mediante ejemplos prácticos para que puedas emplearlos de forma fluida durante tu escritura o conversaciones en este idioma.
¿Qué es there is y there are?
Estos términos son estructuras de la forma impersonal del verbo haber, que son empleadas para el tiempo presente. Aunque es posible utilizarlas con otros tiempos verbales en función de la oración que se esté manejando. Observa un ejemplo:
- There is a lot of food on this plate (hay mucha comida en este plato)
- There are four tomatoes in my fridge (hay cuatro tomates en mi nevera)
Como puedes observar, ambas palabras se traducen con una forma del verbo haber en tiempo presente; con la diferencia de que en el primer caso es empleada para el singular y en el segundo para el plural.
¿Cuándo se utiliza there is y there are?
Estos términos los puedes emplear de diferentes formas ya que se trata de la existencia de algo, lo que en español podría ser considerado como “hay”, teniendo en cuenta siempre que there is será empleado para el singular y there are en el plural. Para visualizarlo en determinados casos, toma nota de los siguientes ejemplos:
Singular
- There is a cat in the park
- There is a bus stop on the avenue
Plural
- There are seven bottles of beer in the fridge
- There are three cats in the dining room
Negaciones
Cuando es necesario emplear there is o there are en oraciones negativas, debe ser acompañado de is not o are not (isn’t y aren’t respectivamente); según se trate de singular o plural, echa un vistazo a los ejemplos:
- There isn’t any bottle of beer in the fridge
- There aren’t any cats in the dining room
Preguntas
Cuando vas a emplear there is o there are en una pregunta, esto lo debes realizar colocando is o are según sea el caso al principio de la frase. Observa el ejemplo a continuación.
- Is there any bottle of beer in the fridge?
- Are there any cats in the dining room?
La respuesta en estos casos suele ser corta y se realiza repitiendo “yes, there is” en caso de ser afirmativa o “no, there isnt´t” en caso de ser negativa.
Para el plural se escribre de forma similar, siendo las posibles respuestas “yes, there are” o “no, there arent´t”
Existen muchas otras combinaciones que pueden ser realizadas para efectuar preguntas abiertas, empleando en este caso how many, how much y otros términos. Citando un ejemplo sería:
How many drinks are there in the fridge? There are 3 drinks in the fridge
Recuerda que how many es para objetos contables y how much para incontables:
How many days are left until Christmas?
How much air is in this room?
Estructura de there is y there are en función de los tiempos verbales
Estos dos términos pueden ser empleados de forma diferente de acuerdo al tiempo verbal que esté siendo empleado. Como guía puedes utilizar las siguientes consideraciones.
Presente simple
Esta es la forma mediante la cual hemos estado manejando hasta el momento there is y there are. Como ejemplo has visto que pueden ser empleados de forma afirmativa, negativa o interrogativa.
- Afirmativa: singular there is – plural there are
- Negativa: singular there isn´t – plural there aren´t
- Interrogativa: singular is there….? – plural are there…?
Pasado simple
El tiempo pasado simple de there is / there are es there was o there were:
- Afirmativa: en singular emplearás there was – en plural there were
There was a bus accident this morning
There were lots of cars in the parking
- Negativa: en singular emplearás there wasn´t – en plural there weren´t
There wasn’t any coffee this morning
There weren´t cell phones fifty years ago
- Interrogativa: en singular Was there…? – en plural Were there…?
Was there any problem with the meeting?
Were there houses near here?
Presente perfecto
Para el presente perfecto emplearás los términos there have y there has been; lo que vendría siendo “ha habido” en español, observa los siguientes ejemplos:
- Afirmativa: en afirmativo singular there has been – plural there have been
There has been a bank robbery
Lately there have been a lot of problems with internet connections
- Negativa: para el singular there hasn’t been – en plural there haven’t been
There hasn’t been much change recently
There haven’t been any slots available
- Interrogativa: para preguntas en singular emplearás has there been…? – si se trata del plural será have there been…?
Was there a party at Juan’s house tonight?
Have there been many visitors to this park?
Futuro simple
El uso de there is o there are en el tiempo futuro es igual tanto para el caso de los singulares como los plurales; empleándose el término there will be que significa “habrá”.
- Afirmativa: se emplea there will be tanto para el singular como para el plural
Tomorrow there will be a party on the beach
- Negativa: utilizarás there won’t be para singular y plural
There won’t be any problems during my vacation
- Interrogativa: para realizar una pregunta debes emplear will there be…?
Will there be eggs in the fridge?
Emplear there is o there are durante tus oraciones o como parte del dialogo en una conversación te será muy sencillo, si practicas un poco y tienes en consideración los tiempos verbales tal y como te lo hemos explicado.
